What we have been up to:

Litter Picking

Eco committee undertook an extensive litter pick around the school grounds in the Autumn term after a very windy couple of days. They managed to fill a black bin bag and ensured that our school grounds were looking tidy, as well as eliminating any danger to animals who might have been interested in any snack wrappers!

Revamping the nature area

Eco committee visited the nature area in September 2023 and shared their ideas and vision for how they wanted things to look. This included a ‘willow walk’, wildflower triangle, new pathways and planters that would grow flowers and edible berries. There is still work to be done, but the area was opened on Earth Day 2024 and children have been enjoying the reading retreat, building new animal homes, weeding and planting  and searching for wildlife in the pond ever since.

Just One Thing Assembly

Eco Committee delivered a fantastic assembly to introduce their idea of encouraging everybody to do 'Just One Thing' to help our school community to be a greener, cleaner, more environmentally friendly place.

Prickly Pigs Hedgehog Rescue Visit

In April, Diane from Prickly Pigs Hedgehog Rescue visited school to lead assemblies on how we can care and look out for Hedgehogs. Children learnt lots about hedgehogs, as well as how to identify if one is in need help. Eco committee drove a push for wet pet food donations of which there were enough for 2-3 weeks’ worth of food at Diane’s rescue centre.

Big Plastic Count

In March, we encouraged our school community to take part in the Big Plastic Count, an initiative to make us think about our plastic usage with a view to finding ways to reduce it, at a local and national level. At the end of the week, pupils and classes submitted their sheets and the Eco committee logged the number of pieces of plastic we had collectively used – it was over 300,000 pieces! We are now looking at ways to reduce our plastic waste.

Summer Fair Preloved Clothes Stall

For the summer fair, Miss Hind suggested a preloved clothing stall. Thanks to the generosity of the school community and their donations, we were able to raise over £120 on the day, with plenty of stock for another sale! Preloved, second-hand, vintage – whatever you want to call it, it doesn’t have to cost the earth!
