Computing
Computing is the safe use of technology to enhance our lives.
Vision for Computing
At Oatlands Junior School, we aim to equip our children with the necessary skills and confidence to benefit from the ever-advancing technology on offer to them. We hope to open their eyes to the wealth of learning opportunities offered by technology and ensure that they also have a solid understanding of how to use it safely.
For children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities to experience success, enjoyment and embrace learning in computing, barriers to learning and participation are removed through additional support and / or adapted provision.

National Curriculum Aims
The national curriculum for Computing aims to ensure that all pupils:
- can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
- can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
- can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
- are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
How is Computing taught and what does it look like at Oatlands?
During Computing sessions, children build upon their learning – year on year – through a development of:
- E-safety awareness
- Computer Science
- Information Technology
- Digital Literacy
We believe that technology can provide enhanced collaborative learning opportunities; engagement of all pupils; easier access to rich content; support conceptual understanding of new concepts and can support the needs of all our pupils. At OJS, Computing units enable children to measure their own progress. We understand and promote the immense value technology plays not only in supporting the Computing and whole school curriculum but overall in the day-to-day life of our school. We enthuse and equip children with the capability to use technology throughout their lives.
Children use iPads to access Purple Mash, the online learning platform, during Computing lessons. We seek opportunities to involve members of the computing community to inspire our students, providing them with a purpose to their projects. We involve the school in national and global events and competitions so children can join the wider computing community. Our computing curriculum teaches pupils to become responsible, respectful and competent users of data, information and communication technology.
What your child will leave OJS knowing, understanding and appreciating in computing!
At Oatlands we recognise that computing is fundamental element to modern life. Our aim is to make computing at Oatlands as relevant and as accessible as possible to the children’s lives. Oatlands children are taught to develop a love for the subject and a desire to apply computing to a range of everyday problems. We also take part in local and national computing events such as: E-safety week and National Coding Week.
Pupil Voice Group
Digital Leaders
The Digital Leaders meet with Miss Houseman every half term to share ideas about how to make computing and our use of technology even better and to help plan and organise themed days or events such as Safer Internet Day and Purple Mash competitions. Our Digital Leaders are looking forward playing our part in developing our use of iPads at Oatlands Juniors School. They help promote the importance of e-safety within the school community.
