Dear Parent/Carer

 Welcome Back!

I hope you all enjoyed a lovely half-term break. It’s great to be back in school, especially because of all the fabulous curriculum activities that have already been happening. Sporting events are a big part of our curriculum offer during and after the school day, especially in summer term. Our after-school sports clubs are in full swing alongside sporting competitions. Last week a group of talented Y4, 5 and 6 athletes represented OJS in a triathlon competition. In the Dodgeball competitions, Years 3 and 4 placed 2nd  and Years 5 and 6 placed 4th. Well done to all our fabulous competitors who represented the school so well with the superb sportsmanship, too. This week, Y6 are looking forward to their American Football PE lessons. This is in response to feedback from our pupils who expressed an interest in learning about popular sports from other countries. Year 5 are enjoying their Tennis PE lessons delivered by Harrogate Racquets instructors and it’s great to see how much the children have grown as tennis players.

With the Football World Cup starting this week, we recognise this is an exciting competition for the children to follow and Mr Charles is enlisting the help of Sports Crew to keep up-to-date with the progress of teams, especially the home nations. Football cards and sticker albums are a long-standing tradition, and we invite pupils who are interested in sharing and swapping their cards and stickers to bring these into school on Friday only, where Mr Charles and I will be running a lunchtime club.

Lots to look forward to this half-term; please see calendar of events on our school website as a reminder and for your reference.

If you can offer your help for any of the forthcoming trips or events, please contact your child’s class teacher. Thank you.

Sports Days

A reminder that our Sports Days this week are as follows:

-Year 3 Thursday morning

-Year 4 Thursday afternoon

-Year 5 Friday morning

-Year 6 Friday afternoon

Fingers crossed the weather is warm and sunny this week, so that the field can be used. If the weather forecast looks inclement for Thursday and Friday, we will contact you on Wednesday and Thursday to advise you that they are cancelled the day before and let you know the reserve dates and times.

A reminder that on hot, sunny days, please ensure your child arrives at school with sunscreen already applied, a water bottle and sunhat, so that they can enjoy their playtimes outside safely and comfortably.

Y2/3 and Y6/7 Transition

Our Y2/3 transition programme of events is well underway, and we look forward to welcoming our new Y3 intake of children on their visits to OJS over the coming weeks.

Y6 pupils will be visiting their new secondary schools this half-term and they have already started to have visits from their new Heads of Y7. Our Y6 team are liaising with their Y7 colleagues to ensure that the transition to secondary is happy and successful for all our children. This can be an unsettling time for some Y6 pupils, so if you have any concerns, please do contact your child’s class teacher.

Bike Bus

Bike Bus returned on Friday 5th June.

A huge 'thank you' to Hazel and Ben from WalkBikeScoot and all our volunteers for organising and supervising our Bike Bus. We really appreciate all the hard work the volunteers and organisers put into this event to make it a wonderful success each and every time.

It was wonderful to be joined by Councillor Viv Poskitt on our Bike Bus on Friday. Viv is the first woman to be Mayor of Harrogate. As part of her role she is keen to encourage as many people as possible to travel around Harrogate on foot, on a bike or on a scooter.

And finally… a Royal Visit!

Miss Neville recently attended the Youth Opportunity Summit at Buckingham Palace, where she had the honour of meeting His Majesty, The King. The event brought together leaders, ambassadors and organisations dedicated to creating opportunities for young people. During the summit, she met and spoke with a range of inspiring figures, including Gareth Southgate, Benedict Cumberbatch, Lisa Nandy MP, Richard Masters and representatives from The King’s Trust. The day provided a valuable opportunity to share ideas, build connections and celebrate the positive impact of youth organisations across the UK. Reflecting on her visit to Buckingham Palace, Miss Neville says: “Special thanks go to The Boys’ Brigade and the Youth United Foundation for making this memorable experience possible.”

Thank you for your continued support.

Yours sincerely
