Disability Sport Awareness Week & Anthony Cotterill Visit

It was Disability Sport Awareness Week in PE from 10th to 14th March. We run this week in school to give children the opportunity to participate in disability sports, raise awareness of how disabled people can compete in sports, show how sports can be adapted to be more inclusive, and help build empathy and understanding around disability sports. Year 3 and 4 classes tried athletics, including sprint races, long jump, and throwing, while not using some of their limbs. Year 5 and 6 took part in sitting volleyball. The children really enjoyed the sports they tried and articulated well how it felt for them and why it is important to understand how others feel. To follow up on this week, Team GB wheelchair tennis player and Paralympian Anthony Cotterill visited the school on Wednesday 2nd April. He did two fantastic assemblies and took questions from Sports Crew at the end. Anthony shared inspiring messages about resilience, doing our best, and overcoming challenges. Each member of the Sports Crew read their questions confidently, and Anthony was impressed with the quality of their questions!
